Writing about my experience of raising autistic, ADHD and PDA children
I was asked to write a chapter in a book about raising children with special needs, written from a dad's perspective. I feel privileged to have been able to collaborate with such a wide range of amazing fathers - all with very different experiences, but who all wrote with honesty, warmth and a surprising amount of humour.
I love writing and I'm really proud to have been able to contribute with my perspective of what it's like to raise three neurodivergent kids.
I hope to be involved in more literary endeavours over time and when I do, I'll add them to the list below.
The Journey into S.E.N.D Fatherhood: Fathers Beyond Limits
Fourteen SEND fathers. Fourteen journeys. This book brings together the powerful, raw, and often hilarious stories of Dads raising SEND children. This book isn’t a guide or a how-to manual - because let’s face it, there’s no such thing when it comes to SEND parenting. Each chapter shares the life adjustments, tough decisions, and reshaped dreams that come with the journey. These Dads have discovered resilience, courage, and unexpected beauty in the chaos of SEND parenting and they’re here to share it all with you.
Alongside with the brave honesty, there’s plenty of humour, because, as the saying goes, “If we don’t laugh, we’ll cry.” And let’s face it, most of us do plenty of that already. Whether it’s tackling the school system, navigating meltdowns, or simply trying to get a decent night’s sleep, these stories capture the courage, devotion, and unshakable joy that define SEND Fatherhood.
This book is more than just a collection of stories; it’s a glimpse into the real, unfiltered realities of being a SEND Dad, celebrating the laughter, confronting the struggles, and showing the beauty that comes from walking this unique path. We hope that as you read these stories, you’ll find understanding, connection, and maybe even a laugh or two to carry you through.
So, grab yourself a cuppa, whether it’s something milky or perhaps a little stronger (we’re not judging) - and join us. This book isn’t just for dads. Whether you’re a Mum, a carer, a family member, or anyone navigating life in the SEND community, these stories offer a rare and deeply personal insight into what it means to parent SEND children from a Dad’s perspective.
